CALIFORNIA COAST CLASSIC ROAD RIDE “THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME”

Press Release: The California Coast Classic, known to cyclists for decades as “The Ride of a Lifetime” because of its epic route down the California Coast and its fully supported bike tour format, will once again be presented by Amgen in 2023. The 23rd edition of the tour, scheduled for September 30 to October 7, 2023, will span eight days of riding 525 miles down the California Coast and is expected to raise more than $1M for Arthritis Foundation’s programs, research, and member support. Fewer than 100 spots remain, and the event is expected to sell out this year with more people across the country enjoying cycling than ever before.

“The California Coast Classic is the Arthritis Foundation’s flagship fundraiser, bringing in more than $1M each year. For 22 years, Amgen’s support as both a presenting sponsor and company team participant has benefitted the 60 million adults and 300,000 children that we serve,” said Shannon Marang Cox, Ride Director and Associate Executive Director of the Arthritis Foundation. “The support we’ve received from Amgen is invaluable. It has provided critical assistance, created opportunities, and had positive impacts that will last for generations.”

The California Coast Classic is a boutique, bucket-list bicycle tour that showcases the scenery of one of the world’s most fabled coastlines as it travels the iconic California Highway 1. Last year, riders came from 25 U.S. states, Canada, and Great Britain and total fundraising topped $1.26 million.

Each rider and team raises critical funds, which allow the Arthritis Foundation to increase quality of life with support and advocacy, improve access to health care, provide kids’ summer camps, arthritis conferences, and more – as well as fund research for better treatments and a cure for arthritis. Approximately 40% of CCC riders either have arthritis or are riding for a loved one with the autoimmune disease that affects one in four Americans.

Throughout CCC’s long history, presenting sponsor Amgen, one of the world’s preeminent biotechnology companies, has provided financial support for the ride and encouraged its employees to participate in it. In 2022 alone, Team Amgen brought 25 riders from seven states.

Unique to the CCC, supporters who cannot attend the in-person bike tour have the opportunity to participate in an Arthritis Challenge Experience (ACE), choosing their own adventure and participating from home while still connecting with the vibrant CCC community.

More information about the bike tour, including its detailed itinerary, is available at the California Coast Classic website and in this short video. The self-paced pedaling adventure is open to cyclists of all levels and welcoming of e-bike riders. It is Gran Fondo Guide’s “Best Charity Bike Tour” and has been named one of “The 30 Best Road Biking Trips” by Outside Magazine.

The dates of the 2023 California Coast Classic are September 30 – October 7 and registration is available at this link.

Classified takes the next step on its ambassador journey by bringing in the former Road World Champion Philippe Gilbert. The company’s investors also include well-respected Olympic and World Champion riders Tom Boonen, Anna Van der Breggen, Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel.

Classified Cycling takes center stage at Belgian Cycling Show Vélofollies to announce its newest ambassador and investor, former professional cyclist and fellow Belgian Philippe Gilbert. Classified Cycling, the progressive drivetrain innovator from Belgium, is proud to add a rider of Phillipe’s stature to the ambassador team.

Born in Verviers in 1982, a city in one of the most famous cycling regions of Belgium, Wallonia, Philippe started cycling at an early age, embarking on an impressive career that saw him crowned Road World Champion in 2012 and win the Amstel Gold Race four times. His palmarès also include two Giro di Lombardia, Liège – Bastogne – Liège, Paris Roubaix and, of course, that famous breakaway Tour des Flandres win in 2017. Far from just a Classics rider, Phillippe also won 7 Vuelta a España stages and an overall victory at the 2014 Tour of Beijing.

Philippe retired last season from professional cycling and has now joined Classified Cycling as an investor and ambassador, bringing a wealth of World Tour expertise and cycling passion to the company and its products.

“I believe in technology as a critical element of performance and cycling itself, and Classified is the future of cycling.”– Philippe Gilbert.

Ex-British Cycling doctor Freeman loses appeal against medical register ban

The post FORMER TEAM SKY DOCTOR BANNED FROM PRACTICING appeared first on Road Bike Action.

]]>

Former Team Sky and British Cycling chief doctor Richard Freeman has lost his appeal against a decision to strike him off the UK medical register taken after he was found guilty of ordering testosterone for doping purposes. Freeman was permanently struck off the register in 2021 after a long-running tribunal said his behavior was “fundamentally incompatible with continued registration”.

His legal team immediately announced an appeal would be lodged but this has now failed, with the High Court finding nothing wrong in the original verdict. A statement from Freeman’s legal team read: “JMW Solicitors is disappointed by the judgment of the High Court rejecting Dr Richard Freeman’s appeal against the decision taken by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service that his name be removed from the medical register.”

Freeman was additionally facing two charges from UK Anti-Doping — one for possession of a prohibited substance and another for tampering or attempting tampering with any part of doping control. UKAD issued a statement on Monday saying it intended to reopen proceedings.

“UKAD’s case before the independent National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) was paused in June 2021 until the conclusion of the High Court appeal,” it said.

“Following confirmation of the outcome of the High Court appeal today, UKAD will be contacting the NADP and Dr Freeman’s representatives with a view to resuming its proceedings against him.”

Freeman admitted to 18 of 22 charges against him but denied the central charge regarding the purpose of the Testogel order in 2011.

The case cast a shadow over both the British cycling team, who had become a dominant force at Olympic Games, and the former Team Sky, who won the Tour de France multiple times in the 2010s.

LIEUWE WESTRA DIES AT 40 https://roadbikeaction.com/lieuwe-westra-dies-at-40/ Sun, 15 Jan 2023 15:45:25 +0000 https://roadbikeaction.com/?p=60863

Lieuwe Westra has died after a life-long battle with depression

The post LIEUWE WESTRA DIES AT 40 appeared first on Road Bike Action.

]]>

Former Dutch cyclist Lieuwe Westra, runner-up to Bradley Wiggins in the 2012 Paris-Nice, has died aged 40 after a life-long battle with depression, his biographer and Dutch media announced on Sunday. Westra was part of the Astana team that helped lift Vincenzo Nibali to victory in the Tour de France in 2014. That season he picked up stage wins in the Tour of Catalonia and the Criterium du Dauphine.

Nicknamed ‘the Beast’ for his unrelenting riding style Westra’s body was found at his business premises on Saturday near the northwest Dutch city of Enkhuizen, local broadcaster Omrop Fryslan said, quoting family sources.

“Lieuwe Westra, 40, died on Saturday afternoon,” his biographer Thomas Sijtsma tweeted.

“Over the last few years the former rider fought a battle with himself and lost,” Sijtsma said, adding “Rest softly, Beast”.

Born in Friesland in 1982, Westra turned professional in 2009, joining the Vacansoleil team.

In his first year as a pro Westra won the Tour de Picardie and was earmarked to have the potential to become one of the great riders from the Netherlands. He took his first WorldTour victory with a stage win in the 2012 Paris-Nice race, ending second overall behind Olympic gold medallist and Tour de France winner Wiggins. Westra also won the Tour of Denmark that same year as well as winning the first of two national time-trial titles.

In 2017 he unexpectedly stepped away from his professional cycling career.

“Westra gave personal reasons for his decision. The previous autumn he admitted suffering from depression, partly due to a broken relationship, while he also doubted his existence as a professional cyclist,” the ANP national news agency said.

Westra also admitted in a 2018 biography that he used the controversial substance cortisone during his career.

“I injected it into my own body to be able to cycle faster, to win prizes and to get compliments,” Westra said in his book.

“You need to seek the boundaries of what is acceptable if you wanted to compete with the big boys,” Westra said.

ENVE JOINS UAE TEAM EMIRATES https://roadbikeaction.com/enve-joins-uae-team-emirates/ Thu, 12 Jan 2023 23:49:24 +0000 https://roadbikeaction.com/?p=60794

Wheel and handlebar partner

The post ENVE JOINS UAE TEAM EMIRATES appeared first on Road Bike Action.

]]>

ENVE has been making some big moves in the last few years. Moving into the tire business, then custom carbon bikes and most recently, a road bike without the custom treatment. It seems they are getting back to their original core business and hitting the world’s biggest races again. Don’t let this distract you, ENVE is, without a doubt working on expanding their business, and we are excited to see what comes out of Utah next.

From ENVE

ENVE has partnered with the UAE Team Emirates and UAE Team ADQ programs as a supplier of wheels and handlebars in a multi-year agreement. The team of two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar will have a full range of SES tubeless road wheels for racing, and Foundation wheels for training. Riders will also have the option of ENVE’s SES Aero Road, SES AR, and Compact Road Handlebars and stems featuring ENVE’s In-Route System that allows for internal routing.

The partnership sees ENVE re-enter the World Tour through both the UAE men’s and women’s teams with a clear focus on performance. After extensive objective and subjective review by UAE, which included wind tunnel and ride testing of several leading industry wheel brands, ENVE’s SES line was chosen due to its Real-World Fast performance philosophy that balances aerodynamics, rolling resistance, and weight.

“In our team we are always looking at ways of innovating and using the best possible material on the market. The decision to choose ENVE came after much testing both on the road and in the wind tunnel and we came to the conclusion these wheels were among the very best available. We are very pleased to partner with a quality brand like ENVE and look forward to working towards many victories together in the years ahead,” said Mauro Gianetti, UAE Emirates Principal & CEO.

Since 2016, when ENVE introduced the SES AR, the first wheel designed to provide aerodynamic efficiency around high-volume tubeless tires, elements of the SES AR rim design have become core performance elements across the entire SES lineup. As high-volume tubeless tires are becoming the norm in the World Tour, the SES line has further differentiated itself from other wheel brands in the wind tunnel, with its hookless and tubeless only design. Having riders that can win everything, from Classics to the general classification at a Grand Tour, while racing on 28mm tubeless tires shows a significant shift in equipment selection for 2023 compared to years past.

“After a short hiatus from World Tour racing, we couldn’t be more excited about our new partnership with UAE Team Emirates. For ENVE, partnerships at this level are all about product development and validation as the world’s best riders take ENVE product to the extreme use case and provide invaluable real-world feedback that helps inspire the direction for future products and technologies,” stated Jeremy Venz, Managing Director at ENVE.

UAE Team Emirates and UAE Team ADQ will line up at Australia’s Tour Down Under from January 12th through 21st as the first team race of the season.

THROWBACK THURSDAY, 2017: FIRST RIDE ON CAMPAGNOLO DISC BRAKES https://roadbikeaction.com/first-ride-campagnolo-goes-all-in-on-disc-2/ Thu, 12 Jan 2023 19:40:56 +0000 https://roadbikeaction.com/?p=60785

Stopping in the Canary Islands for the Italian components

The post THROWBACK THURSDAY, 2017: FIRST RIDE ON CAMPAGNOLO DISC BRAKES appeared first on Road Bike Action.

]]>

By: Troy Templin

One year ago Campagnolo invited us to a three-day new-product launch in Gran Canaria (RBA, July ’16) where they showcased their new Potenza component group. At the time, it seemed like the trip of a lifetime. So, imagine our surprise when a new invite appeared, welcoming us back to the island that sits off the coast of North Africa. More new product, more great riding—bring it!

In typical fashion, Campy would neither deny nor confirm what we were headed to the far-away island to see. The Italians have always been good at keeping their launch plans a secret, but we did have a pretty good idea, and it rhymed with “disc brakes.”

NOT-SO SECRET

Although we’ve seen the Campy disc brake in public for the last year, this would be the first time any outsiders were given the chance to ride them. In the give-and-take game of product development, Campy is well aware that being the first in production is not always possible, nor is it always a benefit. So yes, despite their development being a bit slower than their competition, as one Campy spokesman said, “Campagnolo quality takes time, and there’s no reason to rush to market at the price of our customers’ satisfaction and safety.”

Campagnolo dedicated countless hours to perfecting the rotor and brake pad so they were safe, quiet and dependable.
Campagnolo dedicated countless hours into perfecting the rotor and brake pad so they were safe, quiet and dependable.

The big news from Campagnolo is that from their entry-level Potenza gruppo to the uber-high-end Super Record kit, they are making hydraulic disc brakes available across their entire component line. Disc brakes may indeed be the future, but owing to their legion of loyal traditionalists, Campagnolo will, of course, continue to offer their components with rim brakes as well.

SHIFTERS

The new offerings share most of their technology—from internals to ergonomics, with the large differences being materials used in construction. There are truly only three shifter options. The EPS and the mechanical-shift version with the carbon brake lever are made at a quality and material spec of Super Record but pair with Record and Chorus seamlessly. The Potenza offering will have the same ergonomics but with Potenza-specific internals and an alloy brake lever.

_DSF4389

BRAKES

Although the brakes are 100 percent Campagnolo-designed, we were told that there were early-on discussions about general disc brake technology with the German brake-maker Magura. Unlike Shimano and SRAM, Campy is not offering adapters to a one-size-fits-all rotor form, but instead only offering a flat-mount 160 caliper for the front. In the rear, the customer can choose if they want the 140- or 160mm flat-mount caliper. Because of this size-specific design, the calipers have a different look than we have seen from the competition. Campy claims with these specific and purpose-built calipers, there is less chance of failure, easier adjustment, tighter tolerances and less weight.

A DISC-SPECIFIC CRANK?

Typifying Campy’s tradition of chasing precision-built parts, it was only after extensive testing and research that Campy found that disc brake bikes all had one thing in common—they changed the traditional chain line, which could slightly compromise the precision of the shifting on the extreme ends of the cassette. So, they have designed the new H11 crank that, while not altering the Q-factor of 145.5mm used on their standard cranks (using rim brakes), corrects the chain line with a different offset. The H11 crank is equivalent to the Super Record crank in material and build, but will now improve the shifting and consistency when used on bikes with disc bikes.

_DSF4409

TWO NEW HOOPS

In addition to all their work on developing the new brakes and lever assemblies, Campy has also been hard at work designing wheel systems specifically to work in accordance with the added forces of disc brakes. After test data showed that under braking the front wheel incurs similar forces that the drive side of the rear wheel does during accelerations, they designed a wheel that, for the first time, uses their own G3 pattern on a front wheel.

The two wheels on display were the Bora One DB and the Shamal Ultra DB two-way fit. The Bora will come as a clincher and a tubular in 35mm depth and a 50mm tubular. The name has been a staple for Campy, and now the disc brake version features an all-new carbon rim built specifically for disc brake use. While some of the rim material was changed and minimized from the brake track, the nipple beds were reinforced to handle the increased load from the braking power.

The new Shamal Ultra DB carries over much of the same technologies, but in an alloy rim package. The front rim is 27mm deep while the rear is 30mm deep, and both use the MoMag construction, which means no holes in the tire bed. The hubs also use the AFS rotor mount, while the front has a carbon center shell and oversized alloy flange on the brake side. In the rear the whole hub is alloy, and both the front and rear have USB ceramic bearings.

THE RIDE

The best thing about the volcanic island is that you’ll be hard-pressed to find any road that is flat for more than a mile or two. Everything is either up or down, so what better place to put disc brakes to the test? We flipped through the gears on the coastline rollers and tested the brakes on a few of the small city roundabouts that were buzzing with flocks of Euro tourists.

Finally, we found our way to a steady climb that progressively traversed the scenic mountainside until we topped out at a tall peak that offered a spectacular view of the island. Knowing that the only way to get back to the hotel was riding down a 28-mile descent had all of us panting with anticipation.

Cmp_G4_D2_0095
After less than a mile down the many switchback turns, I found the modulation and power of the Campy disc brakes to be outstanding. The transition has no on/off feeling, but rather an intuitive progression of power. After such a long run down the mountain with countless tight turns and long braking sections, I never felt the slightest bit of hand fatigue or finger soreness. Not only did the brakes supply more than enough power to slow only inches before a hairpin, but they also let me easily scrub little bits of speed with only the gentlest of pulls on the lever.

We were on the mechanical-shift version, and the shifting was as you would expect from Campy. There is no difference in the feel of the shift, and for those that have fallen in love with that secure shift feeling you get with every click of the Campy lever, you will love this too. The sounds and feelings of independent controls are unlike any of their competition, and it’s no wonder they have for so long been renowned as the pinnacle of cycling’s drivetrain.

THE VERDICT

It was almost 100 years ago that company founder Tullio Campagnolo invented the quick release, and ever since, the component company he created has sought to push the road market to the ever-evolving levels of high performance. They might not have been the first to play with disc brakes, but their effort proved impressive. While I thought the quality and aesthetics were unmatched by the competition, better still was the performance.
I came away highly impressed with the modulation and level of instinctive control. I was never able to not get just the right amount of brake that I needed. Even in the most unexpected and demanding of situations, the brakes never felt underpowered, nor did they ever need to be locked up with too much brake.

From shifting and braking to rolling on the new wheels, the entire package was outstanding, and I left giddy in anticipation of riding the new parts on the local roads back home that I know so well.

And last, in addition to the brakes and wheels, Campy also used the launch to show off an all-new, entry-level 11-speed Centaur group to combat the likes of the Shimano 105 and SRAM Rival. Look for more on the release of those new parts in an upcoming issue.

Mark Cavendish told a court on Monday how a mask-wearing intruder held a knife to his face during a robbery at his home. The intruders made off with two Richard Mille watches, valued at a combined £700,000 ($839,000) from the property, about 25 miles northeast of London, in the early hours of November 27, 2021, when Cavendish and his wife, Peta, were at home with their children, according to prosecutors.Cavendish, giving evidence at Chelmsford Crown Court, east of London, said he woke to the sound of voices and that Peta went to investigate.

“I got up to follow her out (of the bedroom) and as I was stepping out of the room is when she started to come back up (the stairs),” Cavendish said Monday.

“She shouted ‘get in’.

“There were figures really close behind her.”

He added he had tried to press a panic alarm but was unable to do so in the dark and was then jumped on by an intruder, who began punching him in the head.

“One held me and another pulled out a knife and just held it in my face,” said Cavendish.

“It wasn’t a knife you have in a kitchen.

“It was black and had holes in it. It was a weapon.”

Peta Cavendish, giving evidence earlier Monday, said she “heard a noise that woke me” in the night and went downstairs to investigate, adding she was “naked” at the time.

Cavendish told the court he was also naked when the intruders broke in. The 37-year-old rider jointly owns the record for stage wins at the Tour de France, with 34, and also won an Olympic silver on the track at the 2016 Rio Games.

Romario Henry, 31, of Bell Green, Lewisham, southeast London and 28-year-old Oludewa Okorosobo, of Flaxman Road, Camberwell, south London, both deny two counts of robbery.

They are accused of robbing Mark Cavendish of a watch, phone and a safe, and robbing Peta Cavendish of a watch, phone and suitcase.

Ali Sesay, 28, of Holding Street, Rainham, Kent, admitted two counts of robbery at an earlier hearing, and the trial was previously told that his DNA was found on the phone of Peta Cavendish, which was found outside the property.

The trial continues.

An accomplished and iconic clipless pedal pioneer, Time pedals were ever-present winners in pro cycling in the 1980s through the 2000s, with legends including Greg LeMond, Miguel Indurain, and Tom Boonen, who relied on Time.

“Time is proud to support this first-class WorldTour team for the coming seasons. It’s a huge step for us to return to the biggest races with Trek-Segafredo,” said Benjamin Marinier, Time Pedals product manager. “Time Pedals are the best in many aspects, such as lightweight, aerodynamic, comfort, adjustments, or floats. We spent much time with the athletes to set up everything according to their needs.”

“There is no better demonstration of the quality and performance of a pedal than a WorldTour team who has so many choices in selecting them for their use. We are excited to see what Trek-Segafredo can accomplish on arguably the most proven pedal system in the world,” said SRAM CEO Ken Lousberg.

Trek-Segafredo will ride Time XPRO Pedals, engineered with a focus on the rider. Time road pedals feature ICLIC Technology for easy entry, low stack height for improved efficiency, a large pedal platform for improved power transfer, and float and Q-factor clears to reduce strain and prevent injuries.

Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic ends 2019 top of the rankings as cycling’s world No.1, winning the World Tour ahead of Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe and Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang. Riding for the Dutch outfit Jumbo-Visma, Roglic won the Tour of Spain and came close to winning the Giro d’Italia this year after also winning the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de Romandie.

Alaphilippe racked up 12 wins and led the Tour de France for 14 stages. Fuglsang did well in the spring classics, winning Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The revelation of the year, Tour de France winner Egan Bernal of Colombia, was fourth and the only Ineos rider in the top 10.
